How to use FounderRoute without guessing.

A practical guide to your workspace, journey stages, Startup Memory, ICP Design, Distribution, Content Engine, Founder AI, community, and billing. Legal policies stay on their own pages.

See the best way to use FounderRoute

Last updated September 12, 2026

Start here

FounderRoute is a route, not a pile of advice.

It keeps your startup context, current stage, evidence, customer model, distribution work, AI, tools, and optional community in one workspace so the next move is clearer.

Use FounderRoute if you are shaping a first idea, validating a product, or already operating a SaaS company. You do not have to begin at Idea. Recommendations are explanations, not orders: you stay in control of the stage and the decision.

Private workspace work stays private until you choose to publish it. For a product tour, see the features page. For legal terms, start with Privacy and Terms.

First session

Create an account, then tell FounderRoute where you actually are.

Setup is short. The point is a useful starting stage, not a perfect profile.

  1. Create an account. Sign up from the home page. Authentication is handled by Clerk.
  2. Complete onboarding. Answer from the current state of the company: idea, customers, revenue, team, and time. FounderRoute recommends a stage from those answers. You can accept it or choose a different one.
  3. Land on the Founder dashboard. That is the hub for the current startup workspace. Journey work, Memory, ICP Design, Distribution, and Spend Tracker live there; Founder AI and Community have their own areas.
  4. Work the current stage. Capture evidence, use AI when it helps, and make a decision at the gate. When you are ready, design the ICP and run one Distribution campaign against it. You can return to an earlier stage when reality changes.

A startup workspace is one company. Free includes one workspace, Founder includes three, Founder Pro includes ten, and Founder Scale includes 25. Switch between workspaces from the signed-in project switcher. Memory storage is shared across the account rather than multiplied per workspace.

Where things live

The dashboard is the hub. Everything else hangs off the current startup.

If you are looking for a tool, it is almost always a dashboard tab, the ··· menu, the journey sidebar, Founder AI, or Community.

Profile

Name, tagline, logo, banner, goal, and categories for the current startup workspace.

Memory

Accepted facts, uploaded sources, and missing context that Founder AI can use later.

Founder Momentum

Weekly Founder Moves, follow-ups, streaks, focused check-ins, and evidence-based reviews.

ICP Design

A guided customer model: 20 core questions, optional signals, a report, and an approved version the rest of the workspace can use.

Distribution

A campaign operating system: Today, Campaigns, Studio, Content Engine, Opportunities, Learn, and Email, connected to Journey, Memory, and the approved ICP.

Vibecoder

Guides, checklists, a glossary, and tool notes for founders building with AI assistance.

Activity

A log of recent work in the current workspace.

Spend Tracker

Expenses and runway, opened from the ··· menu on the dashboard.

Founder AI

A separate AI area for chat, a founder brief, stage health, and a recommended next action.

Journey

Stage-by-stage work from the signed-in sidebar, with evidence and a decision at each step.

Community

Optional public profile, posts, founder directory, mutual reviews, and private messages.

ICP Design and Distribution are paid workspaces, opened from the signed-in sidebar. Founder Check-in and Founder Review are optional Momentum tools. Spend Tracker is under ··· → Spend Tracker.

Stages

Each stage has an outcome, evidence, and a decision.

The journey is a route from a specific opportunity to an operating company. Free includes Idea, Validate, and Plan. Paid plans unlock the later stages.

Idea

01

A specific opportunity worth validating.

Validate

02

Reduce the highest-risk assumptions with external evidence.

Plan

03

The smallest commercially meaningful product and a realistic delivery plan.

Build

04

A release that delivers the promised core value safely enough for its audience.

Launch

05

An initial qualified cohort and an evidence-backed next decision.

Activate

06

Users reach meaningful first value reliably and quickly.

Retain

07

The right users repeatedly receive value.

Monetize

08

Product value converts into sustainable revenue.

Acquire

09

A repeatable source of qualified, economically viable customers.

Grow

10

The company operates against its most important constraint.

Legal & Scale

11

Legal, financial and operational risks are managed before they become scale blockers.

Inside a stage, complete the substages, attach evidence, then use the decision gate. FounderRoute can recommend proceed, refine, or stop. You can disagree. A recommendation is only as good as the context you have given it.

For the product story behind each stage, see Founder stages.

Context

Startup Memory is the trusted record of the company.

It stores accepted facts across identity, market, audience, product, traction, brand, goals, legal, and operations so you do not re-explain the startup every time.

  • Add facts yourself, or upload source files for AI to propose facts with citations.
  • AI analysis of uploaded files needs your consent. Proposed facts stay proposals until you accept, reject, merge, or replace them.
  • Founder AI and later stages read accepted Memory, not every draft in the workspace.
  • Memory is private to the workspace. It is not a community profile and is not used to train FounderRoute models.

Do not upload passwords, API keys, payment-card data, government identifiers, health information, or other people’s sensitive data. File size and depth of Memory can differ by plan.

Customer model

ICP Design is how you turn ‘who is this for?’ into a version the product can use.

It is a guided workspace for building an evidence-backed ideal customer. You confirm what you know, grade how you know it, generate a report, and approve an immutable version. Startup Memory, Journey, Distribution, and Founder AI then use that version until you deliberately update it.

What it is

ICP Design is not a persona template and not a one-line audience field. It is a customer model specific enough to recognize in a conversation, a community, or a customer list: the person, the pain, current behavior, language, attention, buying process, and value boundary. Free includes limited access; Founder, Founder Pro, and Founder Scale include full access.

Open it from the signed-in sidebar. Progress saves as you go. You can leave a question as a draft, jump between questions, and come back later. Buying context (businesses, solo founders, consumers, both, marketplace, or not sure yet) changes examples and buying guidance. It does not change completion.

What you have to know

The core is 20 founder-confirmed answers in five chapters. Each answer can carry an evidence grade: founder belief, personally observed, heard directly, observed behavior, or paying behavior. Stronger grades raise evidence strength. Weaker grades stay visible so the report does not pretend belief is proof.

Know the person

Who feels the problem most painfully, what they are responsible for, the environment that shapes decisions, and what an ordinary day looks like before the product enters it.

Understand the pain

Their own language for the problem, the deeper cost underneath, the event that makes it urgent, and what doing nothing costs in time, money, risk, or reputation.

Understand current behavior

The current workflow, tools and workarounds, frustrations, and why existing solutions have failed to solve it properly.

Know how to reach and sell

Search language, where they already spend attention, who they trust, and who uses, champions, approves, and pays.

Define value and boundaries

The outcome that makes value obvious, where the product should enter the workflow, trial vs payment barriers, and who is almost a fit but should not buy.

After the 20 answers, you can add optional customer signals: who actually uses the product, who has paid or asked about pricing, where the strongest users came from, what message converted, the first-value moment, retention behavior, churn reasons, and repeated customer language. Skip any signal you cannot answer honestly. The report will list that limitation.

How it works

1. Define

Choose the buying context (businesses, solo founders, consumers, both, marketplace, or not sure yet). Confirm 20 core answers. You can save drafts, jump between questions, and optionally prefill unanswered questions from Startup Memory. Prefill never marks a question Done.

2. Signals

After the 20 answers, record up to 10 optional customer signals: actual users, paying intent, strongest users, acquisition sources, converting message, first value, retention, churn, and repeated language. Skip any signal you do not have.

3. Review

See completion, evidence strength, and signal coverage. Choose a deep AI report or a founder-authored report. Both use the same layout. The founder-authored route uses no AI credit and adds no inference.

4. Report and approve

Read the brief, maps, language library, evidence assessment, channel bets, content ideas, and next experiment. Approve to lock an immutable version. Later edits open a new version instead of rewriting history.

The deep AI report uses your answers, optional signals, confirmed Memory, Journey evidence, metrics, decisions, and Distribution learnings. It adds contradictions, product implications, three channel bets, ten content ideas, and a validation experiment. If analysis fails, your answers stay safe. Retry, or open the founder-authored report, which organizes confirmed answers into the same layout without AI inference.

From the report you can save the next experiment to Journey, open a Distribution campaign draft from a channel bet, or create a Studio draft from a content idea. Campaign drafts keep the approved ICP version, so later distribution work stays attached to the customer you actually approved.

What happens when you approve

Startup Memory

Approval updates five customer fields: ideal customer, pain points, jobs to be done, current alternatives, and attention/trust channels. Conflicts are shown; nothing is overwritten silently.

Journey

The recommended next experiment can be saved to the backlog or made the current Journey action.

Distribution

Channel bets can become campaign drafts that keep the approved ICP version. Content ideas can become Studio drafts. Running campaigns can later feed learnings back into the next analysis.

Founder AI

Once approved, Founder AI can use the current ICP version as trusted customer context instead of a vague persona.

Approval creates an immutable version. Updating later opens an editable draft and, when you approve again, becomes the next version. For the product story, see ICP Design.

Growth experiments

Distribution is an operating system for one campaign you can prove or disprove.

It connects a growth objective to daily work, approved assets, captured openings, optional email delivery, and recorded results. When the finish line arrives, you make an explicit continue, change, scale, or stop decision.

What it is

Distribution is not the old drafting desk of strategy, compose, replies, and a planner. It runs one measurable experiment at a time, using confirmed Startup Memory, the current Journey stage, and the approved ICP when you have one. Open it from the signed-in sidebar. Free includes limited access; Founder, Founder Pro, and Founder Scale include full access.

The point is a useful answer, not more content. A campaign is a hypothesis with a channel bet, a primary metric, a deadline, and execution actions. Today keeps one current action in view so marketing does not become a second to-do list. Learn stays empty until real data exists.

How a cycle works

Set the outcome

Define one objective and one channel bet with a measurable target and a finish line. Acquire and Grow campaigns also open a Journey cycle so the hypothesis stays attached to stage work.

Ship the work

Keep one current action moving. Use Studio for assets and Email for consented sends. Today shows what is due and what is waiting on founder approval.

Record reality

Log published URLs, replies, conversations, and results. Verified email events count as evidence. FounderRoute does not invent reach, impressions, or engagement.

Make the call

When review is due, choose continue, change, scale, or stop. Record what you believe differently now. That learning can inform the next campaign and the next ICP analysis.

The parts of the workspace

Today

Mission control. Shows the focus campaign, one current action, due work, the approval queue, bottlenecks, and a way to capture what happened: published URL, reply, conversation, result, note, or blocker.

Campaigns

Create from a template or from an AI proposal you review first. A campaign needs an objective, audience, offer, message, hypothesis, deadline, primary channel bet, metric target, and at least one execution action before it can start. Audience can come from the approved ICP, an experimental override, or a custom description. Only one campaign can run at a time.

Studio

Create campaign-linked assets: posts, threads, outreach, emails, launch copy, directory listings, partnership pitches, landing messages, briefs, scripts, and graphics. AI proposals stay proposals until you apply or reject them. Approval, version history, restore, and duplicate are built in. Publishing on other platforms is still something you do; Studio records the work.

Content Engine

Draft X, Reddit, and blog copy from confirmed Startup Memory, the approved ICP, and the current stage. Choose a platform, format, and intent, then review drafts before saving them into Studio.

Opportunities

Capture a source, objection, deadline, founder note, or community discussion with the original excerpt. Opportunities are scored by ICP match, objective fit, evidence, timing, value, effort, risk, and capacity. AI-only ideas are labeled Suggested angle, never Found opportunity. Convert a saved opening into a Studio asset when you are ready.

Learn

The scorecard for recorded results. Add a manual metric with a source note, build a UTM tracking link, and complete a campaign review: result, decision, evidence, learning, confidence, and what should happen next. Missing measures stay missing. Completed reviews are stored as history and can update Journey.

Email

Manage contacts and segments, attest consent, compose one-to-one or group sends, attach files, personalize, and deliver through your own Resend domain. Delivered, opened, clicked, bounced, and complained events come back as verified results. Email is not unsolicited bulk outreach.

How it actually runs

Start from Today. If there is no campaign, prepare an AI proposal from Memory and Journey, or build one manually from a template such as first 10 conversations, waitlist, launch week, message test, founder-led content, community, outreach, partnership, or directory launch. Review the proposal before it becomes the live campaign.

Starting a campaign checks readiness. Missing objective, audience, offer, message, hypothesis, deadline, channel bet, metric target, or first action will block the start. If another campaign is already running, pause or review it first. Acquire and Grow campaigns also open a Journey cycle so the distribution hypothesis stays attached to stage evidence.

Audience can be the approved ICP, an experimental override of that ICP, or a custom description. Channel bets cover founder-led content, community, direct outreach, launch platforms, email, partnerships, SEO, directories, referrals, paid, or a custom channel. The bet records why it fits, required founder time, expected cost, expected signal, and test duration.

Studio and Email execute the campaign. AI can draft copy; proof warnings and missing information stay visible. You approve the version you want. Email requires a verified Resend domain you control, and a contact is not marked consented until you attest they gave permission. Broadcasts can be sent now or scheduled. Delivery events are reconciled back into the campaign record.

Content Engine drafts X, Reddit, and blog copy from the same company context. Open it from Distribution, or read the full flow in Content Engine.

Opportunities are sourced, not scanned. Paste the excerpt, name the person, community, or publication, and say why it matches the audience and objective. The score is transparent. Converting an opportunity creates a Studio asset while the source stays attached.

Learn records what happened. Manual metrics include who added them and a source note. UTM links work with publishing you still do yourself. The campaign review asks for the result (won, lost, inconclusive, cancelled), the decision (continue, change, scale, kill), the evidence, the learning, and optionally the next global action. That closed loop is what later ICP analysis can read as distribution learning.

What it does not do

  • It does not scrape the internet or claim to have found a community post you did not capture.
  • It does not invent reach, impressions, or engagement. Missing stays missing.
  • It does not post to social networks, directories, or launch platforms for you.
  • It does not send unsolicited bulk email or use purchased lead lists. Consent is founder-attested.
  • It does not apply AI proposals without your review.

For the product tour, see Distribution. Follow the Acceptable Use Policy for outreach and integrations.

Channel drafts

Content Engine writes from the company record, not a blank prompt.

Draft X, Reddit, and blog copy from confirmed Startup Memory, the approved ICP, and the current Journey stage. Choose platform, format, and intent, then review before you copy or save into Studio.

Where it lives

Content Engine is part of Distribution. Free access uses the Free plan’s lower AI and Memory allowances; Founder, Founder Pro, and Founder Scale include the full Distribution workspace with their larger allowances. Drafts you keep can save into Studio so they join campaign assets and version history.

Platforms

X

Posts, articles, and threads written from confirmed Startup Memory, the approved ICP, and the current stage—not a blank prompt.

Reddit

Posts and comments for a community you name. Paste the room’s rules when you have them. Promo intents are blocked when the community does not allow them.

Blog

SEO articles and briefs shaped by ICP search language, Memory, and stage. Full articles include title, sections, and FAQ when objections exist; briefs give outline and title options to write from.

How a draft works

1. Choose a platform

Open Content Engine inside Distribution and pick X, Reddit, or Blog.

2. Pick format and intent

Formats depend on the platform: post, article, or thread on X; post or comment on Reddit; full article or brief on Blog. Intent ranges from helpful to promotional, with Reddit promo stance respected.

3. Generate from company context

Drafts use confirmed Startup Memory, the approved ICP when one exists, and the current Journey stage. Nothing invents claims the company has not recorded.

4. Review, copy, or save

Edit or copy what you want. Saving creates a Studio asset so the draft joins the same campaign and version history. FounderRoute does not post for you.

What it uses

  • Confirmed Startup Memory as trusted company context.
  • The approved ICP when one exists, including search language and objections for blog work.
  • The current Journey stage so the draft matches where the company is, not a generic launch tone.
  • For Reddit, the community name you enter and any rules you paste, including whether promo is allowed.

What it does not do

  • It does not scrape Reddit, X, or the open web for openings.
  • It does not post, schedule, or publish on other platforms for you.
  • It does not treat promotional intents as allowed when Reddit rules say otherwise.
  • It does not invent company claims that are not in Memory or the approved ICP.

For the product story, see Content Engine. Distribution campaign loops are covered in Distribution.

Founder AI

Context first, then a suggestion you still have to judge.

Founder AI uses the current project, stage, evidence, accepted Startup Memory, and the approved ICP when one exists. It organizes work and explains options. It is not legal, tax, accounting, or investment advice.

Open Founder AI from the signed-in app. You can chat, review a founder brief, inspect stage health, and ask for a next action. Choose Auto or a named model. Routine chat and Memory processing use a fast model automatically so monthly credits last longer. Your selected model is used for heavier analysis.

Optional and public only when you share

Community is separate from the private workspace.

Profiles, posts, founder pages, and published testimonials are visible as the interface indicates. Unpublished journey work, evidence, uploads, and AI chats are not.

What you can do

Share progress, join discussions, find founders, request a mutual review, and continue one-to-one in browser-encrypted messages.

Private messages

Message bodies are encrypted in the browser. If a private key is lost, those messages may be unreadable. Recipients can still copy or share what they read.

Mutual reviews

Two founders agree to review each other’s startups and write independently. Neither side sees the other review until both have submitted. A public review can be quoted with the author’s name if they publish it. A private note cannot.

  • Write about the product, not the person.
  • Be specific. Don’t trade praise for a quote.
  • Decline is always allowed. No explanation needed.
  • Published reviews can be copied with your name. Private notes cannot.
  • No harassment, confidential details, or fake identity.
  • Blocking cancels any open exchange with that founder.

Follow the Community Guidelines and Acceptable Use Policy. You can report or block another founder from their profile or an exchange.

What exactly is FounderRoute?+

FounderRoute is a guided operating system for building a SaaS company. It connects your startup context, journey stage, decisions, evidence, practical tools, and founder community so you can understand what matters next.

Who is FounderRoute built for?+

It is built for SaaS founders, from a first idea through an operating and growing company. You can begin alone, with a cofounder, before launch, or after customers are already using the product.

Can I use FounderRoute if I have already launched?+

Yes. FounderRoute does not force every company to begin at Idea. It uses your current product, customer, revenue, and growth signals to recommend the most relevant stage and focus.

How does FounderRoute determine my current stage?+

Your starting stage is recommended from onboarding answers, startup evidence, goals, and existing progress. You review that recommendation and remain in control of the stage you choose.

What if I disagree with a recommendation?+

FounderRoute shows why a stage or action was recommended, but it does not replace founder judgment. You can review the evidence, adjust the context, and choose a different direction when you know something the system does not.

How does FounderRoute use AI and my startup data?+

AI is used to organize context, explain recommendations, and help you work through decisions. Your private workspace is not automatically published. Provider, retention, and processing details are in the Privacy Policy and Data Processing Terms.

What is ICP Design?+

ICP Design is a paid workspace for building an evidence-backed ideal-customer model. You confirm 20 core answers, optionally add customer signals, generate a report, and approve a version that Memory, Journey, Distribution, and Founder AI can use. Updates create a new version instead of silently rewriting the last one.

How does Distribution work?+

Distribution is a paid operating system for one measurable campaign at a time. It connects the daily action, approved assets, Content Engine drafts, captured opportunities, optional Resend email, and recorded results, then asks you to continue, change, scale, or stop. It does not scrape the internet, invent missing metrics, or post to other platforms for you.

What is Content Engine?+

Content Engine is a Distribution workspace that drafts X, Reddit, and blog copy from confirmed Startup Memory, the approved ICP, and the current stage. You choose platform, format, and intent, review the draft, then copy it or save it into Studio. It does not scrape communities or post for you.

What can the community see about me and my startup?+

The community can see the profile, posts, updates, and startup information you intentionally make public. Private workspace information, internal evidence, and unpublished decisions are kept separate from community sharing.

How do mutual founder reviews work?+

Two founders agree to review each other’s startups and write independently. Neither founder can see the other review until both have submitted. Private feedback stays between the founders, while a testimonial can only be displayed or reused when its author gives permission.
